10dollarblessing$10 Blessings

Our mission committee gave each congregational person $10 with a heart and a card that said it was from Volant Methodist Church and our contact information on it.  Each congregational member was to hand it our in December to anyone they came in contact with as a little “extra” giving such as a waitress, a drive-thru, friend, neighbor, mailperson, etc. And then write on the heart who they gave it to and hang it on our “giving tree” in the church.

At Christmastime, Volant Methodist Church asks the local school district for families/students that do not have a lot of money for the holidays.  We are given a number of families with the children’s ages and interests.  Our congregation buys a certain amount of gifts for each child.

            Crisis Shelter

Since 1981 Arise has been the community’s response to violence and abuse, serving victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Other Serious Crimes and Older Victims of Any Crime, as well as services to Human Trafficking victims, while also working to prevent violence and abuse through prevention education, intervention training, and public awareness. Therapy services have been added for trauma victims.  As a member of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the local shelter is active in the oldest and most respected coalition in the country. Statewide, the Shelter’s services are recognized for innovative program excellence.

As the only domestic violence emergency shelter and sexual assault agency in Lawrence County, the agency’s comprehensive programming serves to address many clients’ needs under one roof.  Arise programs, along with those of the many community partners we collaborate with, offer practical solutions and helpful opportunities to the families we serve. Our services are free to all victims in Lawrence County and surrounding communities regardless of gender, race, age, sexual orientation, income level, or disability.

Throughout its history, the Shelter, as well as its programs, has continued to grow to meet emerging community needs. As the facility serves the county as a recognized community asset, Shelter programs have become more familiar to the Lawrence County population. Formerly at an undisclosed location, the current facility is clearly identified in the community helping victims to find support more readily.

Annually, the agency serves nearly 1500 victims/survivors in a county with a population of just over 91,000. Staff reaches nearly 5000 students with age-appropriate prevention education each year ranging from pre-school to college ages and nearly 1200 community members with awareness/intervention training.  One of the most powerful solutions to ending the generational cycle of violence has proven to be the agency’s transitional housing program, where families have adequate time to learn the skills of independence.

Building of Hope LogoThe Building of Hope Ministries

The Building of Hope ministry began in the summer of 2017 with a mission to show the love of Christ by providing gently used furniture and basic household necessities. Their focus is on offering a hand up, not a hand out, to people in their community who have fallen on hard times1. They partner with Laskey’s Furniture in Sharon, PA to help fulfill the need for beds. The majority of their grant funding is used to purchase beds, which are then provided to those in need. Additionally, they distribute “Baskets of Hope” containing toiletries, a Daily Bread devotional, and an invitation to church. These efforts benefit various groups, including the working poor, single parents, veterans, the elderly, and individuals with fixed incomes1.

Since their inception, the Building of Hope has served 900 families, providing them with 951 beds and 666 pieces of living room furniture and essentials. Their limited budget relies on local grants and donations to purchase new mattresses, box springs, frames, bed sheets, blankets, and items for the Baskets of Hope. They also use funds to cover utilities at their donated storage space in Hermitage. The ministry’s impact extends to those facing tough times, ensuring they receive basic furniture and household items at no cost
